Adult 6 Week Pottery Basics Classes

Adult Pottery Basics is for Beginners looking to get instruction on a little bit of everything.  In this, students will touch on basic wheel, hand building, surface application, and glazing skills. Each student will become familiar with basic thrown forms (plates, bowls, mugs), Basic hand building skills (coil method, slab method, and pinch), decoration, and vocabulary.

Cost is $195 including all materials.

Day 1:  Demonstration on throwing plates/ bowls. Throwing demo covering proper posture and tool use. 

Day 2: Demonstration on cylinders, tips on getting tall pieces. Demo on handles for mugs. Open studio work time. 

Day 3: Demonstration on slab roller for creating slabs, and low relief texture application. Let slabs set up for next week. Open studio work time.

Day 4: Pinch pot techniques, “Slip-n-Score” for high relief surface applications. No wider than 6 inches in any direction. Open studio work time.  

Day 5: Last day to finish wet clay. Demo on Extruder and Coil building. Visualizing contour.  Open studio work time to finish any techniques from all previous demos. End of class, clean up and sign all pieces. All pieces remaining on the student’s shelf will be fired! 

Day 6: Brief glazing demo with brush or dunking techniques. Bisqued pieces returned and day for glazing. Piece must be completed by end of class. May arrive at the Potter’s Shop as early as 5:30pm on Glaze night only

  • Students will have created a minimum of one cup/mug, bowl, plate, vase, toad house, and small decorated relief wall plaque. Student fee covers the materials of all forms made during the class.   

Class fee includes unlimited use of clay during class time and the ability to keep up to 10 finished pieces.  ($5 each additional piece) 

You will be working with “real” stoneware clays and glazes.  It is the same materials we use in the production of our high-fired stoneware.  Everything you make will be food, microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.

Six week adult classes range in size from 4 -10 people.  Class may be canceled last minute due to low enrollment.  Payment is required at the time of sign-up to secure a spot in the class.

Please wear appropriate clothing for getting clay on, trim your fingernails, tie back long hair and remove any hand accessories.

Finished pottery pieces not picked up in 90 days will be discarded.

Class cancellation policy

No refund is available if cancellation is less than 48 before the start of class.  If you need to miss a session you can join another session in progress as long as room is available. We reserve the right to cancel classes if the minimum enrollment is not reached; full tuition will be refunded.

Please wear appropriate clothing for getting clay on, trim your fingernails, tie back long hair and remove any hand accessories.

Finished pottery pieces not picked in 120 days will be disregarded.



We know practicing helps so each class includes lab time:
Starting with the second class, students can arrive 30 minutes early to warm up prior to the start of the class.  Class fee covers all tools and clay during class and 30 minutes practice time before class.

Add a studio membership upgrade option for only $35.  Studio membership upgrade allows students to access the studio during normal business hours for additional practice throughout the 6 week class.
